Different Types of Prescription Lenses for Spectacles
What are single vision distance, single vision
near lenses?
Single Vision Distance |
Single Vision Near |
 |
Single Vision Distance
glasses are used to improve vision for viewing objects
at distance, for example, for driving. |
 |
 |
This is usually
required for people over 40 years old for reading and
other close-up work. Most people aged 40 and over may
find intermediate and distance vision is blurry. |
Single Vision Near, i.e. reading
glasses lenses - provide a presbyopic wearer with clear
near vision. |
 |
Bifocal
Lenses have both distance and near correction in
one lens with visible lines separate the two. The upper
section is for distance vision. A small portion of the
eyeglass lens below the line is for near vision correction.
Generally, you look ahead or up through the upper section
of the lens to look at objects at distance, and you
look down and through the near segment of the lens to
look at the reading material or close-up work at a distance of up to about
45 centimetres away. |
Bifocal
Lenses are convenient alternatives for people over
40 years old who require separate glasses for distance
and near vision. There are certain requirements on the
frame for bifocal glasses. Please follow this bifocal
glasses link for a list of frames that are suitable
for bifocal glasses.
What are Multifocal (Progressive)
lenses?
|
 |
Multifocal lenses provide vision correction
from distance through intermediate to near |
Multifocal
Lenses, also called Progressive lenses
have corrective powers change progressively throughout
the lens. They are another convenient alternatives
for people over 40 years old who require separate
glasses for distance and near vision. A wearer
looks through the top portion of the lens for
distance vision, middle portion for intermediate
vision, and the lower portion for reading or close
work. Each area is blended invisibly into the
next, without the lines that traditional bifocals
or trifocals have.
Multifocal Lenses provide a smooth transition from distance
through intermediate to near, with all the in-between
corrections included as well. This constant graduation
of the prescription means that you can look ahead through
the top section to see in the distance, drop your gaze
downward slightly through the middle section to view
objects in the intermediate zone (around 65 centimetres
away), and drop your gaze further down to read and do
fine close up work comfortably.
There are certain requirements on the frame for multifocal
glasses. Please follow this multifocal
glasses link for a list of frames that are suitable
for Multifocal glasses. |

multifocal
lenses allow you to see distance, intermediate and near
in one lens. |

What are computer lenses? |
 |
Computer Lenses provide large viewing
area for intermediate and near distance |
Computer
lenses, also called "extended readers" or
"near progressive" lenses, are special progressive
lenses designed for people requiring intermediate and
near focus, for example, when using computer or when
playing music. Unlike regular progressive lenses, it
has large viewing area for intermediate distance (around
65 centimetres away) which allows wearers to see intermediate
distance objects, for example, the entire computer screen,
the music sheet on the music sheet stand comfortably. |
 |
 |
 |
Computer lens
provides extra-wide intermediate vision vision through
the top of the lens, transitioning to extra wide near
Vision through the bottom of the lens |
Depending on age and
prescription, some people may find multifocal lenses
do not provide enough viewing area for intermediate
distance, for example computer screen. |
Computer lenses allow
you to see the entire computer screen and reading material
comfortably. |
Computer lens provides extra-wide
near vision through the bottom of the lens, transitioning
to extra wide intermediate vision through the top of
the lens. So wearers get a wide, clear, uninterrupted
view of their entire work space from the keyboard
and reading materials in front of them, to the monitor.
Depending on the prescription, for most people, it can't
be used for driving or for other activities that require
clear distance vision.
Computer lenses are an ideal specialized pair for presbyopes
and emerging presbyopes who require intermediate distance
focus, for example, when using computers, reading music
sheet on the stand; and who wear single vision, multifocal
or bifocal glasses.
Please note Intermediate Add value is determined based
on the Near Add and your age for approximately 65cm
distance. You may need to adjust the distance to the
monitor slightly to find a clear intermediate focus.
There are certain requirements on the frame for computer
glasses. Please follow this computer
glasses link for a list of frames that are suitable
for computer glasses. |
What type of lenses should I choose?
You most likely only require single vision distance
or single vision near type of lenses before you reach 40 years old.
Once you reach 40 years old, the focusing ability of your eyes declines
due to presbyopia. You will require a separate pair of glasses with
single vision near lenses for close-up work.
If you are over 40 years old, are near sighted or far sighted, you
probably don't like the idea of having to bring two pairs of glasses
(single vision distance for driving, single vision near for close-up
work). Then a pair of glasses with bifocal lenses or multifocal
lenses would be much more convenient as they allow you to see both
distance and near without having to change the glasses. Once you
are used to the multifocal lenses, you will find them much more
comfortable to wear because Multifocal Lenses provide a smooth transition
from distance through intermediate to near. Multifocal lenses have
better cosmetic appearance than bifocal lenses because they don't
have visible lines on the lenses.
If you are over 40 years old, a regular computer user or music
player, are near sighted or far sighted, you may find multifocal
lenses do not provide enough coverage on the computer screen
which is usually at intermediate distance of 65cm. A pair
of glasses with computer lenses will give you large wide view
on the computer screen or the music sheet (intermediate distance)
and allow you to read the close-up material in front of you
(near distance).
Remember your optometrist is the best person to ask about the type
of lenses to choose for your lifestyle and vision needs. Your optometrist
should be able to demonstrate the result of different types of lenses.
Please consult your optometrist if you are unsure what is the best
type of lenses for you.
Free Form Multifocal (Progressive) lens design
All the multifocal lenses we provide are technologically
advanced free form multifocal lenses. Free Form multifocal
lenses use the back surface grind lens design. This design
brings the progressive side of the lens closer to your eye,
giving you wider fields of vision through all lens zones.
Free from multifocal lenses provide clearer and wider view
with lower distortion compare with traditional multifocal
lenses, which means you will quickly adapt to the lens and
experience unsurpassed vision comfort.
Ordering Multifocal (Progressive)
or Computer Access Lenses on Internet Made Easy with E Try-on,
it totally takes away the guess work.
We have developed a built-in mathematical measurement system
into the E Try-on
software. The data gathered during E Try-on helps
us to determine the optimal position of the reading or fitting
height of a progressive lens and computer access lens. Your
Multifocal (Progressive) and computer access lenses can
be done just as accurately as if you were in an optical
store on the street.
We strongly recommend you to submit your portrait photo
to try-on the glasses for Progressive Lens or Computer Access
Lens order. The E Try-on
program collects the data that is necessary for fitting
progressive or Computer Access lenses. For instruction on
the requirement of the photo, please visit E
Try-on® guide.
Adjust to the New Progressive Lenses
Please allow one week to adjust to your new
